Industrial Design protection
Industrial design is another creative area for which you can get protection. The rights regulating industrial design are also part of intellectual property rights.
When speaking of industrial design rights one should think about the protection of the visual design of an object. The industrial design can be two-dimensional or three-dimensional. An example of a two-dimensional object is the composition of a pattern or the creation of a shape. An example of a three-dimensional object is a chair or a vase.
The national legislation regulating industrial designs is in the process of being completed. The Bureau for Intellectual Property of Curaçao will render the service for the registration of industrial designs as soon as the new legislation comes into force.
On the international level there are several treaties regulating the protection of industrial designs. Curaçao is party to The Hague Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Industrial Designs, London Act 1934. (Treaty Gazette 1948, no. I 539, see also Treaty Gazette 1974, no. 64)
Contrary to trademarks that can be renewed to an unlimited extent, industrial design rights are for a limited time due to the fact that renewal is not indefinite.
